World's Coolest Reviews: The Divided States of Hysteria #1

Howard Chaykin writes and draws a beautifully satirical view of the United States in THE DIVIDED STATES OF HYSTERIA from Image Comics.  Beginning with a news brief that the president and his entire cabinet have been murdered in a terrorist attack this story follows a cast of characters from every walk of life.  The CIA field officer, the venture capitalist, the serial killer, the transgender prostitute, and the pregnant Muslim suicide bombers that close out the issue.  The story bounces from character to character in rapid succession with all being loosely connected by the sheer chaos of the narrative.

This is definitely not a comic for the easily offended.  Chaykin takes an equal dig at all groups, beliefs, and political alignments.  If you are the sensitive type that does not like to see your little pocket of the world be made fun of or shown in a bad light then don’t pick this title up.  However, if you have a rather cynical view of the world I think this comic is just for you.  Everyone is fair game and the entire comic is wrapped up in this absurd twisting interconnected plot that allows it to skirt the lines of satire and show how ridiculous we all can be at times.  Chaykin’s art is at its usual best.  I am a big fan of his work and really enjoy his exaggerated cartoon style.  Whether or not this comic is good is really hard to put into words.  The better thing is to say that regardless of your view of the world this comic will make you think and that is a good thing.  Go to the store, pick it up, and check it out.  Trust me, it is worth a few minutes of your attention.
