In Batman #24, Batman proposed to Catwoman on a moonlit rooftop four months ago, with her answer held back until this week’s #32 – but it seems DC has a bit of pre-wedding jitters, and has revealed her answer two days early in a USAToday article.
Spoilers ahead for Batman #32…
After a heartfelt admission from Batman that he almost killed the Riddler (and forsaking his morals against killing) but was prevented by the Joker, Catwoman cries and says “Yes” to the Dark Knight’s marriage proposal.
According to USA Today, Catwoman said that their “earned tragedies” and pain don’t compare to the love between Bruce and Selina.
“That to me is what true love is,” Batman writer Tom King told USAToday. “It’s showing who you truly are to someone. It’s letting someone know deep down who you are and that’s horribly frightening and it scares Batman as much as anything ever has. They’re two broken people, and because they’re broken, they have the edges that fit together.”
King says that this puts the characters – and the Batman title – “someplace you haven’t seen before, so we’re going to explore this.”
“Some people are going to think, ‘Oh, my gosh, he’s gone insane, we need to fix him.’ And others will go, ‘He’s gone sane. We finally have a Batman we’ve been looking for,’ ” King said. “Most superheroes, you make them happy and you end conflict – you give Spider-Man a wife and where do you go from there? But Batman’s the opposite: You give him happiness and you create conflict, because he’s fundamentally a sad character.”
Batman #32 goes on sale this Wednesday.
