DC Reveals Dark Nights: Metal’s Evil Batmen

DC Reveals Dark Nights: Metal’s Evil Batmen 1

Dark Nights: Metal is coming, and when it arrives it will bring with it seven twisted versions of Batman.

While readers first learned about The Murder Machine, The Red Death, The Devastator, The Merciless, The Drowned, The Batman Who Laughs and The Dawnbreaker in mid-June, Batman and the rest of the Justice League have yet to discover their existence. But that won’t last long, as DC’s heroes are scheduled to do battles with the denizens of the Dark Multiverse in a series of one-shots arriving in September and November. Each of the Dark Nights: Metal tie-ins will feature “a different, corrupted version of Batman spawned from the Dark Multiverse to wreak havoc on Earth.”

While the image below (by artist Riccardo Federici) is the first clear look at most of the Dark Knights, DC’s solicitation text for September 2017, released earlier this week, offered a look at the Flash’s Dark Multiverse Bat-doppelganger, The Red Death. The cover art, by Howard Porter, accompanied the solicitation text for The Flash #33, which will pit Barry Allen against his Dark Multiverse counterpart in the wake of Dark Nights: Metal #3. Whether The Red Death’s alter ego is a twisted version of Barry, Bruce Wayne or another character entirely remains unknown at this point.

Conspicuous by his/her absence in the art above is The Batman Who Laughs. This character appears to be a Dark Multiverse take on the Joker-turned-Batman. The scribbled promo art for the character certainly indicates this to be the case, though a more recent version of the art added a bit of a twist to the character; he/she apparently has a kid sidekick who looks to have more than a little bit in common with Robin. Additionally, the character’s name references the 1928 film that helped to inspire the creation of The Joker in the first place.

Priced at $3.99, each of the Batman one-shots will also ship with a foil-stamped cover by by Jason Fabok, featuring a protective UV coating. Dark Nights: Metal #1, by Snyder and Capullo, goes on sale Aug. 16.

Attendees at Comic-Con International in San Diego can get a closer look at the art over the weekend, as it is on display at the DC Comics booth as a life-size mural for con-goers to take photos with.
